DODGE CITY – Helen M. (Smith) Gard, 93, died Monday, April 9, 2012 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born September 27, 1918 at Cambridge, Iowa, the daughter of Oran E. and Edith Helen Dewey Adams. A Dodge City resident since 2008, moving from McAellen, Texas as well as a former resident of Scott City, Kansas.

On August 3, 1935, she married Samuel Smith at Dolliver, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 9, 1974. She then married Gene Gard, April 25, 1979 at Scott City. He preceded her in death on October 26, 2008.

Survivors include: her son, Russ Smith and wife Mary, Wright, Kansas; a brother, DeWayne Adams, Hollister, Missouri; a sister Floraine Kuennen, Oelwein, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 1 step-great grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son, Kenny Smith; 2 brothers, George David Adams and Donald James Adams; 2 sisters, Donna Mae Kuntson and Juanita Darleen Neilsen.

Memorial Graveside Service will be 10:30 am Saturday April 14, 2012 at the Scott County Cemetery, with Pastor Shelby Crawford presiding. There will be a book signing from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Friday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

The family suggests memorials to Trinity Manor Nursing Home in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
