DODGE CITY - Lawrence Joseph “Larry Joe” Gerber, 68, passed on 26 Feb 2014 at Harry Hynes Hospice, Wichita, KS.
Larry Joe was born 25 April 1945 to Martin and Agnes (Schaapveld) Gerber in Dodge City, KS. He graduated from St Mary’s High School, Dodge City, KS in 1963. He enjoyed the “open road” and the feel of 18 wheels of power within his fingertips; at 19 years old Larry began working for Polkinghorn Feed Yard, and continued his career with Dodge City Coop, Farmland, Cleon Carder and Chaffin until he retired in 2003. His life on the highway gave him lots to talk about and many to talk to, he never met a person he didn’t know and could somehow manage to find a way he was “kin” to them. Building Lincoln Log forts and bridges was a joy Larry would spend hours doing with his children and later his grandchildren. With a passion for photography he would often be seen snapping photos (or in some cases videos) of his family, friends, “babbling brooks”, highway scenery and so much more; because, according to Larry, a photograph can last forever and there may be only one chance to capture that special moment.
Larry married Margaret Dyke, of the home, on 27 February 1997. Earlier in Larry’s life he married Patricia Donnelly on 11 June 1971, during their marriage they had two children, Shayna Bjork, husband Steve, Geronimo, OK and Lance Gerber, wife Rebecca, Dodge City, KS.
Larry is survived by his wife of the home, his daughter and son. Stepsons Jeff Steele, wife Kim, Garden City and Philip Steele, wife Brenda, Phoenix, AZ and grandchildren HD Bone, Clinton Bone, Garritt Bjork, Regan Gerber, Jesse Steele, Kodi Steele, Jared Steele. Three sisters Janis Boyle, Exeter, New Hampshire; Debbie Whitaker, husband Dan, Webb City, OK; Pam Wetzel, husband Paul, Dodge City; one brother, Lanny Gerber, wife Tina, Dodge City; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. And his 5 four-legged “kids”; Elmo, Gizmo, Piglet, Dina & Chuffy.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Dave Boyle.
